A Chihuahua puppy named Charlie has one of the best transformation stories yet. The 5-month-old pup arrived at animal control with cactus prickles from head to toe, especially on his face. He was likely in immense pain, but kindness was on his side. Vets and rescue organizations stepped up to end his discomfort.
Now, Charlie looks better than ever! He’s ready for a fresh start in life, and he hopes his new family will provide him with that. It’s amazing how much a little love and care can change one dog’s life!

A Prickly Predicament
Surprise Animal Control in Arizona found Charlie wandering around covered in cactus spikes. They picked him up and transferred him to the Arizona Humane Society (AHS) right away due to his medical needs. They haven’t said publicly if they know anything about Charlie’s past.
AHS determined that Charlie was covered in cholla cactus spines. Anyone who has been pricked by a cactus knows how painful it can be. Somehow, the puppy got tangled up with a cactus, leaving spikes all over his 5-pound body. AHS’ Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital rushed him to surgery to carefully remove every individual spine. They ensured that no spines were left because they can cause infections if left in the skin for too long.
Charlie had spines everywhere, including his mouth, paws, and eyes. Once all the prickles were removed, vets kept the pup under observation. Luckily, everything went well, and an AHS foster family took him in once he had healed. Then, he was put up for adoption about a month after his intake. Of course, many dog lovers swarmed to adopt him.
Ready for His New Life!
Only a few days after Charlie went up for adoption, he found his forever home! The shelter’s adoption process is on a first-come, first-serve basis, so many applicants were upset that they missed out on this wonderful canine. Yet, the shelter reminds everyone that there are many other dogs still looking for a loving home.
“Just one of the more than 11,000 pets that receive lifesaving treatment in AHS’ animal trauma hospital each year, this lucky pup is a perfect example of the sick, injured, and abused pets AHS cares for here in the Valley who have nowhere else to go,” AHS wrote.
So, even though Charlie found a family, there are still many dogs who need one just as much. Many shelter dogs have been through painful situations like Charlie, so they deserve comfort for the rest of their lives.
